You may not be familiar with the game that is now dominating the Steam rankings. Today saw the early access release of BattleBit Remastered, a 254-player first-person shooter that plays like Battlefield but looks like Roblox. The most popular paid game on Steam right now is CS:GO, which is just behind it on the list of best-selling games worldwide. It costs only $15. It comes as no surprise that it is now among the ten most popular games.
Given its cheap cost and the fact that Steam orders its best-selling games by revenue, not by the number of copies they sell, BattleBit's #1 ranking is astounding. The implication is that BattleBit is presently profitable more than Warzone 2, Starfield, PUBG, and the Steam Deck. Not bad for the OkiGames four-person team, who have spent seven years developing BattleBit in various incarnations.
BattleBit is an immediate hit, and it's simple to understand why after playing it for an hour. It's a very entertaining little FPS that's far deeper than it appears to be. It has the same size, number of vehicles, and amount of devastation as a contemporary Battlefield game, but it also has several Squad milsim elements, such as proximity communication, the ability to construct defensive buildings, bleeding that must be bandaged, and the medic class's unique ability to heal people. Although it's relatively simple to start playing right away, the core is harder than in other multiplayer shooters.
BattleBit's simplicity of use may be its most outstanding feature so far. It has been a very seamless launch, with the exception of a few server resets to handle the over 28,000 players that are presently attempting to play it. Although the firearms sound a touch faint, the movement is quick and the firing is responsive and enjoyable. The battlefields are also very large—there is plenty of space to leave a combat and flank even with 254 people wandering about.
