The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has introduced new guidelines for teacher recruitment, proposing significant changes. In their recent proposal, they advocate for the mandatory inclusion of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) at the Secondary Level, specifically for classes 9 to 12. This recommendation was deliberated upon during a National Conference on TET held yesterday.
The Teacher Eligibility Test serves as a crucial examination for individuals aspiring to become teachers in schools. In collaboration with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the NCTE organized a one-day National Conference on TET to address necessary modifications aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP).
During the conference, Ms. Kesang Y. Sherpa IRS, Member Secretary of NCTE, highlighted that the NEP 2020 has endorsed TET at various educational levels, and NCTE is actively working to propose and implement TET at the secondary level.
Nidhi Chhibber IAS, Chairperson of CBSE, emphasized the pivotal role of TET in assessing the potential effectiveness of a teacher, asserting that a teacher's capability significantly influences the classroom environment.
As per the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, Prof. Yogesh Singh, Chairperson of NCTE, underscored the notion that education aims to foster understanding in individuals. He advocated a shift from a marks-centric approach to focusing on cultivating Indian ethos and values in students, aligning with the vision outlined in NEP 2020.
Abhimanyu Yadav, Convener of TET from the National Council for Teacher Education, delved into crucial aspects during the conference, such as the examination process, eligibility standards, and the paramount importance of ensuring the selection of qualified teaching professionals in schools. These discussions aim to apply these standards across all levels of school education.
Until now, TET was mandatory for classes 1 to 8. However, the NCTE is contemplating making the eligibility test compulsory for all teachers instructing up to Class 12, reflecting their commitment to enhancing the quality of education across all levels.
