Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors are allegedly going to meet this offseason to talk about the second-year forward's long-term future with the team.
Kuminga reportedly became disappointed in the playoffs as his position shrank and would prefer a trade if he isn't going to have a "full-time role" next season, according to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic.
In his second NBA season, Kuminga had some promise, but because Draymond Green and Kevon Looney are both non-shooters, it makes for an uncomfortable lineup.
During a 21-game span when Andrew Wiggins was sidelined with a personal matter, the Warriors became aware of Kuminga's potential. He contributed athleticism on the perimeter on both sides of the court while scoring 13.2 points on average in 24.2 minutes per game.
Golden State Warriors Trade Rumors
Slater and Charania claim that the Warriors will be "retooling" their rotation this summer, but it's not obvious where Kuminga will fit. Kuminga might be the Warriors' greatest trade piece, but according to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, the team's management is reluctant to sell him.
Jordan Poole may be dealt less than a year after agreeing to a four-year, $140 million contract, but if Poole has a down year in 2022–2023, clubs might want a player like Kuminga to take on his contract.
As the Warriors enter the summer, there are more concerns than there are answers since Green will be a free agent and because Klay Thompson wants a contract extension before his own free agency in 2024. A club with a limitless budget like Golden State will face restrictions under the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement.
